I n 1936 W.D. “Pappy” Parks established The Parks Funeral Home in Berkeley Springs, WV at a location on Market Street near the Old Annex Building. He also operated a funeral home in Paw Paw, WV. One of his longtime employees was the well known Welby Brunk. C. E. “Carlyle” Johnson came to Berkeley Springs in 1955 and purchased the funeral homes from Mr. Parks. The funeral home in Berkeley Springs was relocated to Wilkes Street. Mr. Johnson later moved the funeral home into the historic “Old Stoneleigh Mansion” on S. Washington Street. Woodrow W. Helsley also worked for Mr. Parks and in 1951 established Helsley Funeral Home at the current Union Street site. Mr. Helsley retired in 1981, selling the funeral home to Lewis O. Braithwaite. Lewis expanded the building to include the “Carlyle Chapel,” which was outfitted with pews purchased from Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church. Mr. Braithwaite purchased Johnson Funeral Homes from Carlyle Johnson when he retired in 1984. Following the merger, the business operated under the name Helsley-Johnson Funeral Homes, with locations in both Berkeley Springs and Paw Paw, WV. Lewis Braithwaite sold the Paw Paw location and in 1992 sold Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home's Berkeley Springs location to the current owners, Douglas and Ellen Sensel. The funeral Home continues to operate as an independent, family owned business.
