Forever in our hearts, our beloved Ramarro Johan Ratnavale, known in business as John R. Ratnavale, CFA, was born in Holmstad, Sweden on April 20, 1965 to Dr. David N. Ratnavale and Ann-Kristin Ratnavale and died on August 23, 2013 in his mountain retreat in Berkeley Springs, WV. He is survived by his wife and high school sweetheart, Norka Padilla Ratnavale, his children; Jillian Louise Ratnavale, Anna Karin Katherine Ratnavale, William Edward Ratnavale, step sons; Nicholas Oskar Whatley, Erik Victor Whatley, and Oliver Thomas Whatley all of Potomac, Maryland, and his parents Dr. and Mrs. David Ratnavale, brother William Marcel Ratnavale and two nieces Madeline and Olivia Ratnavale of Bethesda, Maryland. Ramarro was a devoted family man, outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed boating, fishing and hiking. He was a philanthropist, rugby player, collector of classic cars, tools, and coins. His joy in life was spending time in nature with his children, family, friends, and dog. As frequently as he could, he traveled to embrace his family in Sweden and Sri Lanka. Mr. Ratnavale served as President and Chief Investment Officer of Chevy Chase Asset Management, the assessment management firm he founded and led as an expert in investment management. Mr. Ratnavale was a graduate of the University of Maryland, where he received his Bachelors of Economics and Finance and his Masters Degree in International Finance. Previously he was the Chief Investment Officer and Vice President at Farmers and Mechanics National Bank in Frederick, Maryland. Mr. Ratnavale held his certification as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) from the CFA Institute, and was a member of the Washington Society of Investment Analysts. Mr. Ratnavale’s work nearest to his heart was his charitable commitment to the community, as he was a Trustee on the Board of the Frederick County Community Foundation and was Chairman of the Investment Committee. In Bethesda, he served three terms as the President of the Bethesda Kiwanis Club and sat on the Board of Directors of the Bethesda Kiwanis Foundation and served as the Chairman of the Investment Committee, and was trustee of the Miracle League of Montgomery County. Ramarro was an extraordinarily, chivalrous, Renaissance man. He will be deeply missed by his wife, children, parents, brother, extended family, friends, and Rottweiler, Freyja. Please join us to honor his memory on Saturday, September 7, at 11am at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, 5450 Massachusetts Avenue, Bethesda, Maryland 20816
